TEN THINGS I’VE LEARNED AS AN EMPLOYEE AND CO-FOUNDER

October 23, 2017    Sandy Huseby, CO-FOUNDER, CO-PRINCIPAL, COO    Crummack Huseby News

1. AS YOU GROW, KEEP YOUR CORE MISSION CONSISTENT

With growth comes new team members and a cultural calibration into our environment. Our main focus is to keep the messaging and experience consistent both internally and externally across departments.  Our wording may change in our mission statement but Margo and I developed 30 Fundamentals that are at the heart of why we started Crummack Huseby.

2. IT’S MORE THAN HUMAN RESOURCE, IT’S “HEART” RESOURCE

The style in which we navigate life and work has changed dramatically over the last 18 years. With all these changes facing people that live and work in the communities we manage, one thing we want to ensure is that our talent, vendor partners, and homeowners are at the heart of it all.  At the core, we seek mutual respect, trust, care, and quality for all, that brings meaning to us.

3. HIRING IS EQUALLY EMOTIONAL AND ANALYTICAL

After many years of going with our gut when hiring new team members, we also implement several tools that we rely on to help us survey a candidate’s fit prior to a first interview.  Over nine years ago we started using the Predictive Index to develop a profile for a specific position and then survey the candidates. If a candidate profile matches the profile of the position, it’s a very strong indication that the candidate will be good in the position. More importantly, it gives us insight into how happy a candidate would be working at Crummack Huseby.

To further understand if a candidate would find joy in their career with us, we also have an interview team to ensure the candidate has a good understanding of the culture and team.  If we must choose between two final candidates, we rely on both the Predictive Index and the input of the interview team.

4. LEADERSHIP LEADS WITH THESE THREE WORDS

Integrity, humility, and determination. The ability to adapt and grow, and understand that things change, but you must forge ahead even with all the ups and downs. This is the determination I’ve had within me and strengthened over time.  Humility is powerful for us all. When you make a mistake, own up to it, and make it right. Over the last three years I have been in an incredible peer-to-peer business mentoring group known as Vistage with 11 different business owners who continue to display these three same characteristics that I hold invaluable. This allows us to give and get advice from people we respect on all levels and then take that back into our work community.

5. EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMPANY

As a business owner, you can get stuck inside “your company”.  If you are not exposed to others, you miss out on the ability to get additional insight, potentially making short-sighted decisions with goggles on.  Being involved in Vistage provides an opportunity for insight from other business owners, providing a safe place to question things and question each other with an open mind. Sometimes it can be challenging to be put on the spot and questioned about your decisions, but it’s been the most incredible experience for me as a person. Business leaders most often attribute their success to mentoring, and Vistage has been both a personal and professional growth opportunity to learn from the best in Southern California. I truly enjoy implementing these new learnings into Crummack Huseby.

6. ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING, EVEN IF NO ONE IS LOOKING

Right and wrong are not always black-and-white, there is often, as in everything, a gray area in between. It is times when we are rushing to meet a deadline or not paying attention to detail that we sometimes drift into the gray area. As a Crummack Huseby team member, when faced with an ethical decsion, I try to slow down and double-check, making sure I have done the right thing and I am making the most ethical decisions in both my professional and personal lives.

7. IF YOU WANT TO GROW, EXPECT SOME GROWING PAINS

We are going through a lot of changes to increase our productivity and improve efficiencies inside the office and in the field. Learning new things can be frustrating at times because we are implementing and asking our team to adapt, and although they want to, there is a learning curve for us all. But we are all so excited about where we are headed and the impact it will have on the staff and clients. Our team is upgrading our software and revamping our policies and procedures to bring our clients the most beneficial property management experience. It takes a lot of work right now but it’s going to allow our team to create additional programs. It’s all worth it.

8. NEVER...

“Never Give Up” and “Never Say Never” are such incredible quotes that go hand-in-hand. I heard these early in my childhood from my father and he adopted these throughout his life. I had the pleasure of watching him not only say it, but truly live it until the day he died.

9. “BEST PLACES TO WORK” TAKES WORK

We are honored by the Best Places to Work in Orange County Award and the distinction. However, more importantly, every day we strive to maintain a work place that serves our clients’ needs and the best way to do that is to empower our employees by giving them the tools and freedom to use their talents in a way that provides satisfaction in their work life balance.

10. THE CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU

This is a “Jerry Maguire” type of change. I worked for another management company for 14+ years.  I was 24 years old when I started there and my heart and soul was in that company.  I was married, had kids and had fun growing my career there. But when the company started to change, I didn’t agree with the changes. At first I was shocked when I was fired but then I quickly realized it was a good thing because I didn’t agree with their way of doing things. Although I had two small kids and a mortgage, I didn’t want to go through that again. Soon after I got fired, Margo walked away from her job at the same company.

Margo and I worked very closely together and relied on each other at that company, so we spent a lot of time on my living room floor strategizing on our next steps. Margo actually had me come to her house and watch “Jerry Maguire”.  She did this to show that risks can provide reward, that being fearless would be worth it. Next thing I knew, Margo received a call and we got our first contract……the rest is Crummack Huseby history!
