4 Fire Prevention Tips For Your Home

Throughout the year, Crummack Huseby community managers make the best recommendation to keep your community safe. There are some easy ways you can keep your home safe as well. It only takes seconds for a fire to spread to an entire room. It is extremely important to be prepared if one should happen in your home.

If there is a fire in your home, always call 9-1-1 first.

To prevent fires in your community and your home, here are 4 tips:

1. Always Be Aware of Sources of Heat
This includes making sure your heaters and oven/stove are off before leaving the house. Leaving either device on can be extremely dangerous.

2. Keep flammable objects away from heat sources
The average distance you want to keep items away from heaters and other heat sources is 8-12 inches.  The hotter the heat source, the further away you are going to want flammable material.

3. Have A Fire Extinguisher and Know How To Use
It is important that every house have at least one fire extinguisher on each floor, and easily accessible. A fire extinguisher may seem like a simple tool but it can be tricky, so train everyone in your home how to use it.  When it comes time to use a fire extinguisher there is a simple four letter acronym to help you remember what to do, P.A.S.S.

  • Pull – Pull the pin
  • Aim – Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze – Squeeze the lever/trigger
  • Sweep – Sweep the fire extinguisher back and forth over the fire to cover it

4. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Detectors are one of the most important warning devices you can have in your house. They now have 2-in-1 detectors which is very convenient.  A detector should be located in every sleeping space and outside the sleeping space to give you maximum warning when sleeping.  There should also be a smoke detector for every floor of your home and one in the kitchen.

Change the batteries in your detectors every year.  The reminder to replace batteries are when you change your clocks for daylight savings!
