Becoming a mentor can boost your own professional development, as well as help others. While mentoring can be challenging, it can also be extraordinarily rewarding, for the mentor, mentee and organization.
For the mentor, the joy comes from watching a mentee evolve and grow. For the organization, and mentee, the benefits are a broader knowledgebase and/or skillset, new responsibilities, motivated staff, and career advancement.
It’s important to note that a good mentor-mentee relationship is a two-way street. Consequently, if you want a good relationship with your mentor, become a good mentee. This requires a genuine interest in your mentor and a willingness to do what it takes to become successful as a new employee in the field or in learning a new skill. Here are a few top qualities of a good mentor.
“A good mentor is one who is willing to listen, share skills, knowledge, and expertise. One who leads by example.” – T. O’Rourke
“…a great mentor nurtures and cultivates passion for what we do.” – A. Hallas
“Each person has an ideal, a hope, a dream which represents their soul. Our mentors give to it the warmth of love, the light of understanding and the essence of encouragement.” - Colby Dorr
“Someone who takes the time to help you succeed. They are always encouraging you to be the best you can be. They help provide you with the knowledge for guidance in future situations.” – E. Huseby
“Being a great Mentor involves genuinely caring about the success of the person you are mentoring. It might mean sacrifice of your time but understanding it is for the benefit of the person looking to gain knowledge from you.” – J. Norton
“Someone who values you enough not only to show you the way, but share with you his/her mistakes and failures.” – T.Nguyen
“A person who leads by example; someone who is willing to guide you but grants you the authority, trust and respect to do the job.” – D. Davidson
“A person that gets to know you well enough to teach you in the manner in which you will understand.” – S. Evens
“A mentor is someone that I can tell anything to, pick their brain and ask questions. They are not perfect, but they embody qualities of who or what I aspire to be. When I get it right, they celebrate my success with me because my wins are theirs too. When I miss the mark, I usually know it already, so they don’t make me feel worse about it, but they help me through whatever it is that I am struggling with so I can avoid it in the future. They coach and teach without preaching.” – C. Hulka
